Palmer (1828 - 1913) was born in Darien, Georgia and came to Savannah as a young man where he opened a hardware business with his dad, Samuel, known as Palmer and Sons, and later renamed Palmer Bros. before finally being incorporated as Palmer Hardware Co. Mr. Palmer had a somewhat tragic life in that his first wife died shortly after childbirth and that daughter, Mary, died at 19 after her dress caught fire from an ember as she stood too close to the fireplace. Mr. Palmer had served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War with the Chatham Artillery and upon his discharge he married his commander's sister, and was soon blessed with a son, John Wheaton Palmer. Unfortunately seven years later the young child would die from unknown causes. Mr. Palmer sold his business in 1907 but remained involved in the Community.
